One of my favorite things to do on my free time is to backpack anywhere that attracts my eye, to explore new regions of the earth where others haven’t been before. Untouched soil is always the best kind of soil. I try to backpack every two weeks or so I can, something about it makes it so serene. Just you and your mates out in the wild, enjoying life the simple way. This time we set our plans to head over to Fossil Creek near Strawberry, AZ (14 miles north of Pine, AZ). The hike in total is 4 ¾ miles down and 5 ¼ miles back up, we originally followed a path trail then decided to hike down & up our own way. It can get pretty treacherous hiking down for hours with more than 56 pounds hanging on your back constantly, but we like to think of it as a fantastic work out!
After two and a half hours of hiking down, we finally reach the washes of an old creek and we continue to walk down a few hundred meters and we have finally reached our amazon-like forestry. On the way down, you can gradually see how things start from desert and dirt to trees and rivers, it’s incredibly neat to see how fast it can change in only a few miles, such a diverse place. So we kept hiking for another two miles and decided to camp at a perfect place on a huge slate rock right next to the creek. We setup our tents, cooked an early dinner, unpacked our bags and slapped on our Camelbaks and continued to venture this forest and really explore the beautiful sights in Fossil Creek. No matter where you hiked, you were bound to find something absolutely amazing.
About a mile down, we reached an breath-taking waterfall! It’s about 38ft tall and produces over more than 2 million gallons of water every hour! Needless to say, we took our bags off and jumped right in! The water was insanely cold, but ever-so refreshing! What made things even better was climbing to the top then jumping off! The water is absolutely transparent on how clean and clear it is. Something you can’t forget!
After the waterfall we continued to walk around and it just keeps getting better and better! Fossil Creek couldn’t get any better. It is definitely recommended for anyone who likes hiking/backpacking wonderful places! Always a great experience, no matter what!
