So, wait what.. Help save the internet? From what..? What is even SOPA/Protect-IP?!
What's SOPA and Protect-IP?
SOPA is a bill that was introduced in the House of Representatives on October 26, 2011 by Lamar Smith with a group of 12 co-sponsors. This bill expands ability and the power of the U.S. law enforcement and as well copyright holders (mainly the entertainment industry) to fight online trafficking of counterfeit services/goods and intellectual property. It's very similar to Protect-IP (PRO-IP/PIPA), in fact it's like SOPA's brother.
Sounds not bad.. How will this even affect me?
This is where you go wrong, do you like Google, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, Zynga, eBay, YouTube, Yahoo, AOL, LinkedIn and thousands of others social networking/media sites? If you do, I would assume you possibly wouldn't support SOPA/PIPA..
It'd affect you in multiple ways from having domain names of Google, Twitter, YouTube, RapidShare, etc actually being ceased by the government and taken down. Although, it's only the domain. You could actually still browse the website by visiting directly with their IP address. So this just alone, won't stop 'pirates' if they're already willing to go the extra mile to use/crack counterfeit software. Overall, more difficult for users to explore the web.
From having a video uploaded on YouTube of a baby dancing to a song playing in the background on the radio could actually lead you to the court room with a nice big lawsuit. There is many scenarios where I could go in on how it could affect you and will.
So.. I'm still slightly confused..
It's a hard thing to take in and actually understand what's going on and what exactly it's going to do. So for that point, Fight For The Future has created an extraordinary video that explains everything that you need to know about SOPA & PIPA.
How can I help to stop SOPA/PIPA?
Everything from blogging to emailing your local representatives to stop the bill and keep our freedom of speech, save our web-related businesses, protect the Internets security and reduce negative impact on websites that host user content (people like you).
